Ladies and Gentlemen, in association with The Love Manatee Academy, it gives me great pleasure to introduce you to...

In my travels around the global interweb I occasionally come across sites that are so good I feel everyone should get to see them.
Inspired by this great site, I created the Derek Warwick Commemorative Award for Excellence in the Field of Web Design... better known as "Dereks".
Each month or two (ahem) a new site will receive this highest of internet accolades and, over time, owning a Derek will come to symbolise all that is great about the dotcom industry.

October 2004. The thirteenth Derek goes to You're The Man Now Dog! This strange site has just one tiny little idea. But that idea has thousands of variations. Take a funny picture. Write some funny words. Play a funny song. Erm... and that's it. So many daft things to look at you'll wonder why you bothered starting! The Picard song is the best one by the way. |
July 2004. The tenth Derek goes to Weebl and Bob. Flash affords us some utter genius to be found on the web. Weebl and Bob have been kicking round for a while now with their wonderful collection of animated shorts featuring an array of lovable characters and great catchphrases. In addition to the Weebl and Bob series you can find a large selection of other animations and games - all well worth checking out. Go on... waste hours. Wanker. |

April 2004. The ninth Derek goes to Anything To Declare. So, how many people do you know who have been travelling? Maybe you have - or maybe you're about to. Or maybe even you're just off on holiday. In which case this is the only website you need to know about. It doubles as a tool to keep in touch with friends and family at home (and with people you might happen to meet on your travels)... and as a information sharing network which allows you to discover hidden secrets about your destination. Brilliant - plus of course it means you'll always remember what you got up to whilst away! The ATD creators said, "All the thought, planning and hard work that has gone into building this site is truly worthwhile when you are presented with such a glowing award. I'd like to thank all the travellers, friends and family who have contributed so far..." |

March 2004. The eight Derek goes to Rate My Boobies. All got a bit too sensible last month, so this month we're looking at the true purpose of the internet... to see boobs! It all started with a simple idea on a little site called Hot or Not - people send in pictures of themselves and you have to say whether they are babes or mingers. It was genius! Now the phenomenon is huge and you can find "rate my" sites on practically any topic. This one though is about boobies. You've asked me to put more boobs on the site. I've asked you to send me them in. So instead - I'm going to link to them. Enjoy... |

February 2004. The seventh Derek goes to John Titor. Between November 2000 and March 2001 a man called John Titor started posting messages on website chat forums. Nothing exceptional about that you might say. However, John claimed that he was in fact a time traveller and he was visiting from the year 2036. This website is a record of those postings and other relevant materials. Is it the truth or simply a brilliant work of fiction? I can't answer that, but I can tell you it makes for fascinating reading. |
January 2004. The sixth long-awaited Derek goes to Engrish.com. I must say, I've actually been lucky enough to visit Japan. It's such a great place; I loved it and I do hope to return one day. But you can't help noticing random English words used all over the place in amusing ways. I followed a car from the airport that had "super extra!" written on the back of it for no real reason... Anyway, jump forward a couple of years and this website was created to celebrate this very phenomenon. You'll giggle to yourself for ages looking over this great collection of strange English phrases, now forever known as Engrish. "This is excellent, you inspect that go!" |
July 2003. The fifth Derek goes to Odd Todd. We've all been there - made redundant from your (dotcom) company, leaving you festering in your own procrastination. I know I have! This brilliantly funny site is about Todd's experience of this very situation and subsequently having no mon-ay. With more great characters and catch-phrases than you can shake a stick at, you'll waste like, ages watching all these little cartoons... and stuff... elf up! Todd says, "Thanks so much... and mep! I'll put it on my homepage bragging totally!" |
May 2003. The fourth Derek goes to The Your Sinclair Rock'n'Roll Years. If you owned a Spectrum when you were younger you'll become instantly addicted to this site and probably shouldn't click through to it until you have a lot of time to spare. If you didn't you probably won't care for it at all. Your Sinclair was the best Speccy magazine you could buy and this site is an unofficial tribute to that masterpiece of modern-day literature. It features the contents of all the magazines themselves, all the old games you used to love playing, plus a load of additional features that will have you saying "I remember that!" to yourself for hours. The mini-movies with Monty Mole are worthy of a Derek alone! Relive your childhood... I dare you. To quote those happier times, this site is skill. |
March 2003. The third Derek goes to Wil Wheaton Dot Net. So, who is this Wil Wheaton? Most people will know him as either Ensign Wesley Crusher in Star Trek: The Next Generation or as Gordie Lachance in the classic film Stand By Me. This is his personal website. What makes the site so good is it reveals that in fact Wil is just a normal kind of chap like you or I. Not only that, but the daily updates also reveal that he has a very cool sense of humour and is quite the clever sort. You go Uncle Willie! |
February 2003. The second Derek goes to the tremendously inspirational... Nosepilot. This site has been around for years now, which on the internet is a lifetime. Some of the most beautifully crafted animation you'll ever see (click on 'warning' to enter the site and then 'animation' to view the story) matched with sublime tunes and surreal storyline. You can just watch this time and time again. Nosepilot says, "Thanks... no big speech... just ask folks on my behalf to read and support anti-mainstream media sites like this." |
January 2003. And the first Derek goes to... Eric Conveys An Emotion. Congratulations Eric. On this site readers are invited to submit emotions which Eric then conveys in a single photograph. Clever. Witty. Brilliant. This site is what the internet was invented for. |
